Swapping litres with kWh

You probably haven’t touched one of these actual items in a long time, but it would not surprise you to see an hourglass used as a “loading” icon, or a floppy disk as a button to “save” your progress. Some images retain their hold onto our shared visual vocabulary even when their physical counterparts are well on their way to becoming museum pieces.

Something similar might be about to happen in our gas stations as those vibrant, prominent price boards enter a new iteration to adapt to the changing winds. The days of prices in pounds per litre may be numbered as signs embrace vehicle electrification. Enter Lidl charging stations in France, where we can now find this:

26% of cars sold in France in 2023 were either battery powered or plug-in hybrids. That means 1,774,729 new cars in need of a plug to top up their batteries when on the go. It’s interesting to see that Lidl has broken down their charging fees by KWs, showing that if you are happy to stop for a bit and grab a coffee, you can enjoy a cheaper rate. If you ask us, it’s a sign of the times!
